The Invisible Rules We Live By
And How They Can Hold Us Back
Have you ever caught yourself thinking, “I can’t do that today” - but when you pause to ask why, there’s no real reason behind it? Just a vague feeling, a silent rule you’ve made up in your head without even realizing it.
We do this all the time.
We create invisible rules to live by:
“I shouldn’t take a break until I’ve earned it.”
“I can’t enjoy myself until everything on my list is done.”
“I’m not allowed to rest on a weekday.”
“I have to be productive to be valuable.”
These internal rules often start with good intentions. Some are born from discipline - and discipline is powerful. It gives structure, helps us build consistency, and pushes us toward our goals. But the problem comes when these rules quietly shift from helpful to harmful.
Suddenly, we’re operating in a system of self-imposed restrictions that keep us from fully experiencing life. They limit joy, spontaneity, creativity - the very things that energize and inspire us. What once kept us focused now keeps us fenced in.
Here’s the truth…
Not all of your rules are real.
Not all of them serve you anymore.
Some need to be rewritten - or completely erased.
Ask yourself:
Who made this rule I’m living by?
Is it helping me live the life I actually want?
If I let go of it, what might be possible instead?
Sometimes, the most freeing thing you can do is challenge the rule you didn’t even know you were following.
Live with intention, not restriction.
Let discipline be a guide - not a jailer.
You don’t have to earn your right to breathe, to enjoy, to be.
You’re allowed to live fully, today.
